Instructions

In this experiment, you will play games and complete activities in Virtual Reality. The core requirement is that you talk aloud about your experience while playing. Before proceeding to the download instructions, please ensure you are ready:

  1. About you
    • Eligibility: You must be at least 18 years old to participate in this study.
    • Perception: You must have normal or corrected-to-normal vision and hearing. This means you should be able to see (for instance, with glasses or contact lenses) and hear (for instance, with hearing aids) clearly to participate.
    • Prolific:You must sign up and participate via Prolific. If you have not done so already, please sign up here.
  2. Check your equipment
    • Hardware: You must have a Meta Quest headset (Quest 2, Quest 3, or Quest Pro).
    • Connections: Ensure your headset is connected to the internet and that you grant microphone access when asked.
  3. Prepare your environment
    • Time: Set aside approximately 30-45 minutes to complete the full session.
    • Space: Find a quiet, private area where you can speak freely without interruptions or background noise.
  4. Important note on payment
    • You will receive your payment via a completion code. This code will appear inside the VR headset only after you finish the activities. Please keep your headset on until you see this code, as you will need to enter it in Step 3 to get paid.

Download the VR application

  1. Get the App
    • Click the link below to view the application on the Meta Quest Store. Click 'add to library'.
  2. Enter Virtual Reality
    • Put on your headset. Navigate to your App Library, find the newly installed application, and launch it.
  3. Complete the Study in VR
    • Once the app is open, simply follow the on-screen instructions. You will be guided through the games and activities entirely within the headset.

Complete the study

  1. Finish the VR Session
    • Complete all activities in the application. Do not exit the app until you reach the final screen.
  2. Retrieve Your Code
    • A unique completion code will be displayed inside the headset at the very end of the session. You can see the code again by opening the application again.
  3. Enter the Code Below
    • Take off your headset, return to this page, and enter the code in the field below. This will verify your participation and redirect you to Prolific for payment.

FAQ

This study is about talking aloud in virtual reality. You will play some games and activities in VR while talking about your experience. We're interested in understanding how people communicate and share their thoughts while immersed in virtual environments.

First, download the VR application from the Meta Quest store (as explained in step 2). Once installed, open the app on your VR headset and follow the instructions inside. You'll play games and complete activities while talking about what you're experiencing.

Make sure to find a quiet space where you can speak freely without interruptions. The study should take around 30-45 minutes to complete.

You need to be at least 18 years old and have a Meta Quest VR headset to participate.

At the end of the VR application, you will receive a completion code displayed in your headset. Enter this code in the field above (step 3) to be redirected back to Prolific and receive your payment.

If you encounter any technical issues, problems with the VR application, or have questions during the study, please go to Prolific and send us a message. We'll respond as soon as possible to help you complete the study.

Note that you can only complete the study once per VR headset.

You need a Meta Quest VR headset (Quest 2, Quest 3, or Quest Pro) with internet access to download the application. Make sure you have enough space and a quiet environment where you can talk freely while using VR.

During the study, the application requires access to internet and microphone.
