Talking in Virtual Reality
This page contains the informed consent information for participants.
Welcome, and thank you for participating in this experiment. This experiment is part of a research project investigating how humans experience being in virtual reality (VR). In this application, you will try out a VR experience and continuously tell us about what you think and feel about that experience. We are very interested in your experience, not so much in what you are seeing or doing. This application is part of a study run by the University of Copenhagen and the IT University of Copenhagen.
In this experiment, you will try a VR application. While you interact with the application, we ask you to speak about the things that come to mind. We will record your voice for later analysis. Do not worry too much about what you say, as long as it is somehow related to the things you feel while engaged with the VR application.
Try to say everything that comes to your mind while you engage with the application
We will remind you to speak if you are quiet for a prolonged time. Please ensure that you are in a quiet and undisturbed space while participating in the experiment. After the VR experience, you will be asked to answer a few questions.
If you feel any discomfort or wish to stop for any reason, you may retreat from the equipment, take a break, or quit the experiment at any point. The experiment lasts for approximately 30 minutes.
Consent is given within the VR application.
During the study you will be asked to talk aloud about your perception of a VR experience.
During the experiment your voice will be recorded.
In case you feel any discomfort or for any other reason wish to stop you may retreat from
the equipment and take a break or quit the experiment all together at any point.
You have the right to withdraw your consent and participation at any point during the
experiment or after without disclosing the reason and without consequence. If you wish to
withdraw, your data will be destroyed. Please make sure to save your Prolific ID and mention
it to us in case of withdrawal.
Please do not disclose personal or sensitive information while participating in the
experiment.
Consent is given within the VR application.
In connection with your participation in a trial as part of a research project at the
University of Copenhagen, we hereby request your consent to us processing your personal
data. We do so under the rules in the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). See the
information sheet for more details about the project and the processing of your personal
data.

data will, therefore, continue to be included in the work done by the project up until the
point at which you withdraw your consent. Information on the processing of personal data for

Talking in Virtual Reality
What is the project about and why do we collect personal data?
This experiment is part of a research project investigating how humans experience being in
virtual reality (VR). In this application, you will try out a VR experience and continuously
tell us about what you think and feel about that experience. We are very interested in your
experience, not so much in what you are seeing or doing.
We collect audio recordings of our utterances of your experience while being immersed in VR.
This data is considered personal data, as your voice can be recognised. The collected audio
will be transcribed after collection. The raw audio will not be shared. The transcriptions
will be shared publicly after the publication of the results of our study.
What personal data does the project process?
The project processes the following information about the participants:
For how long is personal data stored?
Your data will be stored at the University of Copenhagen in personally identifiable form
until the project is completed or, at the latest, on 30.06.2032. After this date, your
personal data will be anonymised or deleted. The project is considered completed upon
acceptance at a journal or conference.
How will your personal data be stored?
All data is recorded with a random identifier assigned to you. All data is stored in a
secure digital or physical location according to GDPR guidelines.
Will personal data be passed on to others, such as researchers at other universities?
Data will only be shared in anonymised form for research purposes only.
Your data will be shared with researchers directly affiliated with the project.
Your data may be shared with other researchers at the University of Copenhagen or in the
EU/EEA for research purposes.
Your data collected for the project will be used in the teaching of students at the
University of Copenhagen after the project is completed. In this case, data will be shared
after being anonymised.
Your data may be shared with research institutions outside the EU/EEA in anonymised form for
research purposes only.
How will personal data be transferred between institutions?
Transcripts of the audio, basic demographics, and questionnaire data may be shared between
partners in the project and later shared as open data to the research community through an
online platform like OSF or ERDA. The raw audio data will not be shared and stored securely
on the platform SIF.
